Large Grants (Huney) Guidelines

Grant Priorities

  • Gives the community an asset it would not otherwise have.
  • Serves the disadvantaged members of our community.
  • Improves the quality of life for people in our community.
  • Protects the environment.

Funding Type

  • Capital

Letter of Inquiry (“LOI”) is Required

  • Click here for a downloadable LOI form.
  • Letters received before Sept. 15th will be evaluated in the Fall.
  • Letters received after Sept. 15th generally will be evaluated in the grant cycle for the following year.
  • A committee member will be appointed to serve as an analyst at this stage, if one hasn’t already been identified.

Timing for Submitting Your Letter of Inquiry

  • Early in the fundraising campaign.
  • The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island prefers to be involved as early as possible in the development of a project. (In colloquial terms, “the later in your development process you apply, the lower the probability you’ll get approved… so the earlier you engage Rotarians, the better.”)

Formal Proposal Required?

  • If invited, yes.

Decisions

  • Typically, by the end of the year with a recommendation to the Bainbridge Island Rotary Board early in the following year.

Grant Size

  • Generally $25,000-$100,000. Larger grants can be considered in some cases.

Application Must Demonstrate (Required)

  • Origination from a nonprofit organization.
  • How Large Grants (Huney) will leverage additional fundraising for the project.
  • The importance of Rotary funding to the viability of the capital project.
  • Applicant’s ability to fund ongoing maintenance, without making additional requests of Rotary.
  • Projects should demonstrate a functional lifespan of at least 10-25 years.

Criteria that the Committee Considers, and You May Want to Address

  • Impacts a large number of people in the community.
  • Serves the disadvantaged and promote equity.
  • Benefits Bainbridge Island residents in total or in part.
  • Located on Bainbridge Island or if off-island, preference is for a project that is financially sponsored in part by another local Rotary club.
  • Protects the environment or promotes environmental stewardship.

Future Cycles

Early in each new Rotary year (i.e., September meeting) the Large Grants (Huney) Committee will review and commit itself to:
  1. criteria for grant consideration;
  2. the total amount hoped to be granted in the coming year; and
  3. the total amount hoped to be held for future years.

Large Grant (Huney) is named after Judd Huney, Past President of our Rotary Club (1953 – 54), who was instrumental in establishing the Large Grants (Huney) Fund from which we provide the money for the Large Grants.
